What to Expect During an In-Home Pet Euthanasia Visit
with Faithful Hearts
When possible, we gather most of the information we need before your appointment by phone, text, or email, so that when we arrive we can focus fully on you and your pet. We are always happy to answer questions ahead of time. Our care at each appointment is tailored to your pet's needs and preferences, so the following appointment flow can be adapted to what is best for you and your pet.

When our team arrives at your home, we will introduce ourselves to you and your pet, and allow your pet time to settle and relax in our presence as we go over any concerns or questions you may have and confirm aftercare choices and memorial options. Alissa (Dr. Anderson) will explain the euthanasia process clearly so that everyone who wishes to be present feels prepared and knows what to expect. There is no right or wrong choice about how much of the appointment you want to witness — you may be present for all, part, or none of the process.

When you are ready, Alissa will gently administer anesthetic and pain medications to help your pet drift into a deep, peaceful sleep. Faithful Hearts uses full anesthesia protocols with every pet so they have no awareness and no fear as they transition. This step allows your pet to become completely relaxed and comfortable, while giving you time to be close to them in a calm, loving moment. When your pet is ready, a final injection is given to allow them to pass gently and peacefully. There is never any rush, and we will allow as much time as needed at each step as long as your pet remains comfortable.

One of the things that makes Faithful Hearts unique is that we always send a two-person team to appointments. Over the years, we have found that this offers meaningful support to families, allows us to respond quickly to any needs that arise, and lets you stay focused on your pet instead of logistics. In multi-pet households, sibling pets often benefit from being present and may need reassurance during the appointment - Ben and Blake are happy to help with that. In most situations, we do recommend companion pets be present. If your pet is shy around men, or if you would simply prefer an all-female presence inside the home, please let us know beforehand — Blake or Ben can remain outside until it is time to assist with transport if needed.

After your pet has passed, we will give you and your pet’s animal companions as much private time as needed for final goodbyes. If Faithful Hearts is handling cremation care through our Furever Faithful Pet Aquamation, we will respectfully transport your pet using a stretcher or basket when you are ready. We are proud to be the first veterinary end-of-life service in the Upstate to personally provide our own dedicated aftercare, meaning your pet receives loving care from a single team from the time they leave your home until they are returned to you or your primary veterinarian. We also do not charge an additional transport fee for this respectful transfer.

A PawPals photo paw print keepsake or an ink nose and paw print, along with up to two fur clippings, is included at no additional charge. These keepsakes are typically created after the euthanasia so that no stress is placed on your pet. Making them in your home also allows you to tell us exactly what you would like, so we can make sure we get it right.

While timing can vary depending on your family’s needs, your pet’s needs, and how much time you would like at each part of the visit, most home euthanasia appointments include about 35–45 minutes in your home.
